Introduction

Give customers a points bonus on their birthday. It’s a low-cost, high-emotion gesture that brings customers back to your store.

What problem this solves

Birthday emails are everywhere. A points bonus stands out because it’s a gift the customer can actually spend.

When to use

  • You collect (or are willing to collect) birthdays from customers.
  • You want a yearly engagement moment that doesn’t feel promotional.
  • You want to reward customers with something their inbox doesn’t already offer.

Before you start

Yuko app is installed on your Shopify store — see Install Yuko on Shopify.
The Yuko Theme App Embed is enabled in your active theme — see Theme App Embed.
Your loyalty program is enabled under Loyalty Program Status at Shopify admin → Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → Programs.
Your point labels are set in Loyalty Settings.
Customers can add their birthday, for example through the birthday section of the Floating Rewards launcher.

Setup guide

Add the way to earn

In your Shopify admin, go to Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → Programs. In Ways to earn, click Add another way and pick Birthday.

Fill in Basic Details

  • Campaign Name — shown to customers on the storefront. You can use [earn_value] and [points_label], for example Earn [earn_value] [points_label].
  • Description — short copy shown with the way to earn.

Set the points

Enter Points to earn on birthday (a whole number, at least 1).

Set Expiry (optional)

Turn on Expiry, then set Expire after and a Period (Day, Week, Month or Year). Expiry is available on select plans.

Review the side panel

  • Status — on by default.
  • Icon — Default, or Custom to upload your own (JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP, under 1 MB).
  • Tiers — turn on to apply VIP tier multipliers to this way to earn.

Save

Click Save.

How it works

  • Yuko runs a daily check for customers whose birthday is today (month and day; the year is ignored).
  • Matching customers with an active Birthday way to earn get the points.
  • Each customer earns once per year.
  • Customers born on 29 February are rewarded on 1 March in non-leap years.
  • You can also send the Birthday Reminder email and use the Birthday Reminder trigger in Shopify Flow.
With Tiers on and VIP tiers enabled, customers in a tier earn the tier’s multiplier for this way to earn, plus any bonus points the tier sets for it. The extra points appear as a separate tier bonus entry.

Decision guidance

  • Pick a generous bonus. Birthdays happen once a year; 200–500 points is a common range.
  • Add an expiry so the gift creates a reason to come back soon.

Limitations

  • Customers without a birth date don’t earn.
  • Excluded customers don’t earn.
  • Birthday points are awarded to Shopify customers.
  • You can have one Birthday way to earn.

  • A homeware brand awards 300 points on birthdays with a 30-day expiry. Customers use them on a self-treat purchase.

Best practices

Ask for birthdays early. Prompt customers to add their birthday when they join.
Pair with a birthday email. Points plus a celebratory message work better than either alone.
