Introduction

Give customers a points bonus on their birthday. It’s a low-cost, high-emotion gesture that consistently drives high engagement and unprompted purchases.

What problem this solves

Birthday emails are everywhere. A points bonus stands out because it’s an actual gift the customer can spend, not a generic Happy Birthday! email.

When to use

  • You collect (or are willing to collect) birthdays from customers.
  • You want a recurring engagement moment that doesn’t feel promotional.
  • You want to reward your most loyal customers with something their inbox doesn’t already do.

Overview

  • Yearly bonus on the customer’s birthday.
  • Requires the customer’s birthdate — collected via account profile, popup or imported.
  • Optional points expiry to encourage prompt use.

Before you start

Yuko app is installed on your Shopify store — see Install Yuko on Shopify.
The Yuko Theme App Embed is enabled in your active theme.
Your loyalty program is enabled at Shopify admin → Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → Settings.
Points label and currency are configured.
You have a way to collect birthdates (Yuko’s account block, your signup form, or an existing CRM).

Setup guide

1

Open the campaign

In your Shopify admin, go to Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → Ways to Earn → Birthday.
2

Set details and points

Enter a campaign name, description and points value (e.g., 200).
3

Set expiry (optional)

A 30-day expiry is a healthy default — it tells customers the gift is for now.
4

Save & activate

Toggle Active and click Save.

How it works

  • Yuko runs a daily check at the start of each customer’s local day.
  • If today matches the customer’s stored birthdate (year ignored), the points are credited.
  • The customer can be notified via the Points earned email if enabled.

Decision guidance

  • Pick a generous bonus — birthdays only happen once a year. 200–500 points is a common range.
  • Add an expiry so the gift creates urgency to come back.

Limitations

  • Customers without a stored birthdate don’t earn (silent skip).
  • Year-of-birth is ignored; only month + day are matched.

Examples

  • A homeware brand awards 300 points on birthday with 30-day expiry. Customers redeem on a self-treat purchase.

Best practices

Collect birthdates at signup. Adding a single optional field captures most of the data you need.
Pair with a birthday email. The points bonus + a celebratory email outperforms either alone.

FAQs

Through the Yuko account block on your storefront, or through your signup form if you collect it there. You can also import birthdates via CSV.
Yuko prevents earning more than once per calendar year for the same customer. Edits don’t re-trigger the bonus in the same year.
