Introduction

VIP Tiers create levels in your loyalty program — Silver, Gold, Diamond and so on. Customers move up tiers based on their activity, and each tier unlocks better benefits like points multipliers, exclusive rewards and storefront recognition.

What problem this solves

A flat loyalty program rewards every customer equally. Your top 20% of customers typically drive the majority of revenue and deserve preferential treatment. VIP Tiers make that distinction explicit and give the rest of your customers a clear path to climb toward.

When to use

  • Your top customers contribute disproportionately to revenue.
  • You want a progression-based loyalty experience customers can climb.
  • You want to lift customer lifetime value by giving customers a reason to consolidate spend with you.
  • You want a clear “you’ve made it” moment for high-value customers.

Overview

  • Tiers — start with the default Silver. Add as many additional tiers as you need (typically 3–4 in total).
  • Calculation method — what triggers tier movement: total spend, total points earned, or order count.
  • Calculation period — the time window: lifetime, rolling year, or calendar year.
  • Benefits per tier — points multipliers, exclusive rewards, and a Shopify customer tag.
  • Auto-assignment — customers move into tiers automatically as they cross thresholds.

Before you start

Yuko app is installed on your Shopify store — see Install Yuko on Shopify.
The Yuko Theme App Embed is enabled in your active theme.
Your loyalty program is enabled at Shopify admin → Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → Settings.
Points label and currency are configured.
At least one Way to Earn campaign is active so customers actually have measurable activity.
You’ve decided on a calculation method that matches your business goal.

Setup guide

1. Enable VIP Tiers

1

Open VIP Tiers

In your Shopify admin, go to Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → VIP Tiers.
2

Toggle VIP Tiers Status

Turn on the VIP Tiers toggle.

2. Add and configure tiers

1

Open the Tiers section

Scroll to Tiers. The default Silver tier is already there — it can’t be deleted.
2

Add additional tiers

Click Add tier and create higher levels. A common starting setup:
  • Silver — default tier (threshold = 0)
  • Gold — e.g., $400
  • Diamond — e.g., $1000
3

Configure each tier

Click a tier to expand its configuration:
  • Tier name — customer-facing label.
  • Visible on storefront — toggle on if you want the tier surfaced in widgets.
  • Tag identifier — the Shopify customer tag Yuko writes when a customer enters this tier (e.g., yuko-tier-gold). Used for segmentation in your email/ads tools.
  • Description — short copy shown in widgets.
  • Threshold — the spend / points / orders required to enter this tier.
  • Points multiplier — e.g., 1x / 1.5x / 2x.
  • Benefits — see next step.
4

Add tier benefits

Open the Benefits section on each tier and add:
  • Percent discount
  • Amount discount
  • Free shipping
  • Free product
  • Store credit
Benefits are surfaced in the Cart Redeem widget’s VIP section and the Customer Account hub.

3. Choose calculation method

Pick how progression is measured. This applies across all tiers.
Customers move up by spending more. Best when your goal is revenue growth.
Customers move up by earning more points across all activities. Best when your goal is engagement growth.
Customers move up by placing more orders. Best when your goal is purchase frequency.

4. Choose calculation period

Tier progress never resets. Best for long-term loyalty programs and high-LTV customers.
Tier progress is the last 12 months. Best for keeping customers active — they have to keep buying to keep their tier.
Tier progress resets every January 1. Best for seasonal programs and cohort-based reporting.

5. Configure advanced settings

1

Open Advanced Program Settings

Scroll to Advanced program settings.
2

Set the program start month

Useful for calendar-year and rolling-year programs.
3

Choose tier reset behavior

  • Reset after period end — customers drop to the highest tier they qualify for in the new period.
  • Remove all tiers after reset — customers reset to the base tier and must re-qualify.

6. Reset VIP Tiers (optional, irreversible)

This wipes all customer tier assignments and progress. Use only when intentionally rebooting the program. There is no undo.
1

Click Reset VIP Tiers

From VIP Tiers, click Reset VIP Tiers.
2

Confirm

Type the confirmation phrase and click Reset.

How it works

  • Every customer always belongs to a tier.
  • When a customer’s activity crosses a threshold, Yuko upgrades them and writes the new Shopify tag.
  • The points multiplier applies at the moment points are awarded, not retroactively.
  • Tier changes can trigger a notification email (configured in Email Notifications).

GoalMethodPeriod

Grow frequencyOrder countCalendar year

Reward long-term loyaltyAnyLifetime

Limitations

  • The default Silver tier cannot be deleted.
  • Reset is irreversible.
  • Tier changes don’t retroactively re-cost rewards customers have already earned.
  • Multipliers apply only to Way to Earn events — they don’t multiply manually credited points.

Examples

  • Revenue-focused (Lifetime, Total spend):
    • Silver — $0
    • Gold — $400 (1.5x multiplier, 5% off member discount)
    • Diamond — $1000 (2x multiplier, free shipping, exclusive products)
  • Engagement program (Rolling year, Total points):
    • Silver — 0 points
    • Bronze — 500 points (1.25x)
    • Gold — 2000 points (1.5x, 10% off)
    • Platinum — 5000 points (2x, free shipping, priority support)

Best practices

Keep it to 3–4 tiers max. More tiers dilute the meaning of each one.
Make higher tiers meaningfully more rewarding. A 1.1x multiplier won’t change behaviour; 2x will.
Show benefits clearly on the storefront — use the Cart Redeem widget’s VIP section, the Customer Account hub or the Rewards Landing Page.
Use Shopify customer tagging to segment in your email tool. VIP-only emails are some of the highest-converting you’ll send.

FAQs

No — Silver (or whatever you’ve named the default) is permanent. You can rename it but not delete.
Yes. Every customer always belongs to a tier; the base tier is the default.
Yes, but it can move customers between tiers. Communicate any major changes via email so VIPs aren’t surprised.
Yes — the multiplier is applied to the calculated points at the moment of award.
Refunds reduce cumulative spend / points / orders. If the new total drops below the tier threshold, the customer is moved down on the next evaluation.
