Where to find this: Shopify admin → Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Referral → Program → Referral Rewards

Introduction

The referral program has two independent rewards: the Referrer Reward (for the customer who shares) and the Friend Reward (for the new customer who opens the link). You can give each side a different kind of reward.

What problem this solves

Referrers and friends want different things. A referrer may value points or store credit they can use later. A friend needs a clear reason to place a first order. Setting the two rewards separately lets you match each side.

Available reward types

Friend rewards are always discount codes. The friend sees the code in the Friend Welcome Popup and can apply it at checkout.
Earn Points needs your loyalty program to be enabled. If it isn’t, no points are issued.

Configuration options

When you click Add Reward (or Change Reward) on a reward card, you pick a type and then fill in its configuration page. Which settings appear depends on the type.
Friend discount codes are always limited to the friend’s customer account.

Decision guidance

Picking the referrer reward

Good for engagement-led programs. It ties the referrer back into your loyalty program and lets them redeem on any reward.
Good for premium brands. It feels like money on file rather than a coupon.
Good when you want the referrer to come back and buy again soon.
Good when you want a non-cash reward that reads like a gift.

Picking the friend reward

Easy to explain: “Get $10 off your first order.” Add a minimum purchase amount to protect margin.
Works well for higher-AOV stores, where 10 to 20% is a meaningful amount.
Works where shipping cost is a known reason for abandoned carts.
Works for product launches or sample-size items, putting a specific product in the friend’s hands.

How it works

  • Friend reward: Yuko creates the friend’s discount code when they claim it in the Friend Welcome Popup. The friend must be a new customer (no previous orders), and each customer can receive only one friend reward.
  • Referrer reward: Yuko issues it when the friend places a paid order that uses the friend’s referral code:
    • Discount-code types create a Shopify discount code for the referrer.
    • Earn Points credits the referrer’s points balance.
    • Store Credit adds Shopify store credit to the referrer’s account.
  • Expiry is counted from the moment the reward is issued.

Limitations

  • Friends can’t receive points or store credit; friend rewards are discount codes only.
  • There is one referrer reward and one friend reward per program.
  • There’s no cap on how many successful referrals one referrer can be rewarded for.

Examples

Best practices

Don’t make either side feel cheap. A $1 discount looks like an afterthought.
Keep the two rewards in proportion. A big friend reward with a tiny referrer reward reduces the referrer’s motivation to share.
Give each reward a clear Title. The title is what customers see in the referral widgets.
