Introduction

Let customers spend points to remove shipping costs from their order. It works especially well where shipping is a known reason carts are abandoned.

What problem this solves

Many customers drop out of checkout when they see the shipping cost. A points-funded free-shipping reward turns your loyalty program into a direct fix for that.

  • Shipping is expensive relative to your average order value.
  • You see a big drop-off between cart and checkout.
  • You want a value reward that’s easy to explain.

  • 100% off shipping.
  • Optional Shipping Restrictions: limit it to selected countries or exclude expensive shipping rates.
  • Optional Coupon Prefix and Purchase type.
  • Optional minimum purchase amount or minimum quantity of items.
  • Optional combinations with product and order discounts, and an optional expiry.

Before you start

Yuko app is installed on your Shopify store — see Install Yuko on Shopify.
The Yuko Theme App Embed is enabled in your active theme — see Theme App Embed.
Your loyalty program is enabled under Loyalty Program Status at Shopify admin → Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → Programs.
Your point labels are set in Loyalty Settings.

Setup guide

Add the reward

In your Shopify admin, go to Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → Programs. In Ways to redeem, click Add another way and pick Free Shipping under Online Store.

Fill in Basic Details

Set the Reward Name (shortcodes [points_required] and [points_label] are supported) and a Description.

Complete the Reward Configuration

  • Points Required — the points cost.
  • Coupon Prefix — the start of every code (up to 8 characters, default yuko).
  • Purchase type — One-time purchase, Subscription or Both (default). Subscription options only take effect if your store sells subscriptions.

Set Shipping Restrictions (optional)

  • Countries — All countries (default) or Selected countries. Selected countries must be within your store’s shipping zones, and you must pick at least one.
  • Shipping rates — tick Exclude shipping rates over a certain amount and enter the maximum shipping rate. Rates above it aren’t discounted.

Set Minimum Requirements (optional)

Choose No minimum requirements, Minimum purchase amount (Minimum Subtotal) or Minimum quantity of items (Minimum Quantity).

Choose combinations (optional)

Under Combine with other discounts, tick Product discount and/or Order discount. A free-shipping code can’t combine with another shipping discount.

Set Expiry (optional)

Turn on Expiry and set Expire after and a Period (Day, Week, Month or Year). Expiry is available on select plans.

Enable and save

Turn on Status in the side panel and click Save.

How it works

  1. The customer redeems the reward from a loyalty widget.
  2. Yuko deducts the points and creates a single-use Shopify free-shipping code for that customer.
  3. At checkout, the code removes the shipping cost when the destination and shipping rate meet your restrictions and any minimum requirement is met.

Decision guidance

  • Pair it with a minimum purchase so you aren’t shipping a very small order for free.
  • Use Selected countries if you only want to absorb domestic or regional shipping.
  • Exclude expensive rates so express or international upgrades aren’t free.

Limitations

  • Selected countries must be in your Shopify shipping zones.
  • If shipping is already free for the order, the code saves the customer nothing, but the points are still spent once they redeem.

Examples

  • Domestic only: 300 pts, Selected countries = United States, Minimum Subtotal $40, expires after 30 days.
  • Standard shipping only: 500 pts, all countries, exclude shipping rates over $15.

Best practices

Test checkout in each country you allow before launch.
Expect high redemption. Free shipping is popular, so plan your points economy for it.

FAQs

Yes, unless you tick Exclude shipping rates over a certain amount. Then rates above your maximum aren’t discounted.
Only countries within your store’s shipping zones can be selected. Add the country to a shipping zone in Shopify first.
No. Yuko doesn’t offer a shipping-discount combination for free-shipping codes. It can combine with product and order discounts if you allow it.
