Introduction

Allow customers to spend points to add a specific product to their cart at no cost. Powerful for moving inventory, promoting new launches and giving high-tier customers a tangible perk.

What problem this solves

A free product feels more generous than a discount of equivalent value. It’s also a controlled way to put a specific item into customers’ hands — a launch sample, a slow-moving SKU, or a brand-essential trial.

When to use

  • You’re promoting a specific product or launch.
  • You want a high-perceived-value reward.
  • You want to move slow-moving inventory through the loyalty channel.

Overview

  • Customer redeems and the chosen product is added to their cart at $0.
  • Single product per reward (create multiple rewards for multiple products).
  • Optional minimum cart purchase to claim.
  • Optional combinability and expiry.

Before you start

Yuko app is installed on your Shopify store — see Install Yuko on Shopify.
The Yuko Theme App Embed is enabled in your active theme.
Your loyalty program is enabled at Shopify admin → Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → Settings.
Points label and currency are configured.
The product you want to give away is published, in stock and has at least one variant.

Setup guide

1

Open the reward

Login to your Shopify admin, then go to Apps → Yuko Loyalty → Loyalty → Ways to Redeem → Free Product.
2

Configure basic details

Set reward name and description.
3

Pick the free product

Use the Shopify resource picker to select the product (and variant if needed).
4

Set points required

Enter the points cost.
5

Configure additional settings

  • Minimum purchase amount — prevent a $0 cart with only the free product.
  • Combinability with other discounts.
  • Expiry — how long after issue the reward stays valid.
6

Save & activate

Toggle Active and click Save.

How it works

  1. Customer redeems the reward.
  2. Yuko issues a Shopify discount code that adds the product to cart at $0.
  3. The customer must add at least one paid item to the cart (if minimum is set) and check out.
  4. On order completion, the free product is recorded in the customer’s redemption history.

Decision guidance

  • Set a minimum purchase so the free product comes alongside a paying order.
  • Limit redemption per customer if the product is high-value or low-stock.
  • Pair with a launch announcement to make the redemption feel like a privilege.

Limitations

  • Out-of-stock products cannot be redeemed; the redemption fails at checkout.
  • Variant-specific rewards require the variant to be selected at reward setup time.

Examples

  • Sample drop: 800 pts for a free trial-size product, $50 minimum order, 30-day expiry.
  • Tier-only perk: 0 pts (auto-issued via VIP) for a free anniversary candle, $75 min order.

Best practices

Pick products that benefit from being tried. Trials and discovery items convert into repeat purchases.
Keep stock topped up — a redeemed-but-unfulfilled free product is a worse experience than no reward.

FAQs

The customer can still apply the discount but Shopify won’t ship out-of-stock items. Refund the order if needed.
Not in a single reward — create multiple Free Product rewards or use a manual workflow to gift multiple items.
